RESOLUTION INTRODUCED BY EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE EXPRESSING ITS STRONG SUPPORT FOR THE JOB CORP PROGRAM AND IN PARTICULAR, THE DELAWARE VALLEY JOB CORPS CENTER IN CALLICOON, NEW YORK.
WHEREAS, the Job Corps program, administered by the United States Department of Labor, is the nation’s largest residential career training program for economically disadvantaged youth ages 16 through 24; and
WHEREAS, the Job Corps program provides career technical training, academic instruction, job placement assistance, and life skills development at no cost to eligible students, helping to prepare them for long-term personal and professional success; and
WHEREAS, the Delaware Valley Job Corps Center, located in Callicoon, New York, has served the Sullivan County region and beyond for over fifty years, delivering high-quality education and vocational training in areas such as healthcare, construction, hospitality, and information technology; and
WHEREAS, the Delaware Valley Job Corps Center contributes significantly to the local economy by employing 101 staff, supporting local businesses, encouraging students to volunteer in the community, and preparing a skilled workforce that helps to meet the evolving labor needs of the region; and
WHEREAS, the Center serves as a critical resource for at-risk youth, providing a safe, structured, and supportive environment in which students can thrive, develop self-sufficiency, and achieve their full potential; and
WHEREAS, the Job Corps program offers vital housing, education, and life skills training to young people who have aged out of the foster care system-many of whom lack stable housing, family support, or access to higher education-providing them with a pathway to independence and long-term success; and
WHEREAS, many graduates of the Delaware Valley Job Corps program go on to obtain employment, pursue higher education, and become productive and engaged members of their communities; and
WHEREAS, preserving and strengthening the Job Corps program and its regional centers is vital to ensuring equitable access to education and workforce opportunities, especially in rural areas like Sullivan County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Sullivan County Legislature hereby expresses its strong support for the Job Corps program and, in particular, the Delaware Valley Job Corps Center in Callicoon, New York; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Sullivan County Legislature calls upon state and federal leaders to continue investing in and protecting the Job Corps program as a critical tool for workforce development, youth empowerment, and transitional support for foster care alumni; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Governor of the State of New York, the Commissioner of the New York State Department of Labor, the United States Secretary of Labor, and the members of the New York Congressional Delegation.
